Rahul Gandhi criticizes Centre for its ‘anti-agriculture’ policies

The Wayanad MP has already lambasted the Centre for enacting new agricultural regulations, accusing it of doing so in order to harm agriculture and hand it over to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's supporters

NEW DELHI — In the midst of farmers' protest, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called the new farm legislations as "anti-agriculture laws" and accused the government of supporting capitalism, demanding that they be repealed.

In a tweet today, the Congress MP remarked in a Hindi tweet, “Will not let the field be sand, Will not give gifts to friends. Withdraw the anti-agriculture law! #FarmersProtest.”

The Wayanad MP has previously criticized the Centre for passing new agricultural laws, accusing it of creating these to damage the agriculture business and handing it over to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's allies.

‘Indian government appears uninterested over farmer’s plight’

He had previously said, while speaking at an event in Wayanad in February of this year, that the world was aware of the difficulties experienced by Indian farmers, but the Centre government is unable to comprehend their suffering.

He observed that pop artists have spoken out against the plight of farmers, but the Indian government appears uninterested. They (Centre) will not repeal these three new laws, as per Mr Rahul Gandhi, unless they are forced to do so and that there was a compelling reason.

‘New laws designed to ruin India's agricultural system’

He claimed that these three new laws are designed to ruin India's agricultural system and deliver the entire business to two or three of Narendra Modi's associates.

Farmers have been protesting on the national capital's various borders since November 26 last year against three recently enacted farm laws: Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

Several rounds of talks between farmer leaders and the Centre have taken place, but the impasse remains.

Jobs for the relatives of farmers who died protesting farm laws

Meanwhile, according to a statement quoted by News18, the Punjab government approved jobs for 104 legal heirs of farmers or farm labourers who died resisting the Centre's three farm legislation.

As a one-time measure, the mother, father, married brother or sister, married daughter, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren of a deceased farmer will be eligible for employment.

Chief Minister Amarinder Singh further asked concerned departments to grant any additional relief necessary to ensure that the relatives of all dead demonstrators are given jobs.
