Congress to fight Punjab elections 2022 under Captain Amarinder’s leadership: Harish Rawat

After meeting with a team of Punjab Ministers and MLAs at his residence here, he made the remarks about Punjab elections 2022 while speaking to media.

NEW DELHI — In the midst of new internal strife within the Punjab Congress, AICC state in-charge Harish Rawat said that the party will fight in the Punjab elections 2022 under the leadership of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

He made the comments while talking to reporters after meeting with a team of Punjab Ministers and MLAs at his residence here.

He had previously stated that the party has a plan in place to deal with any challenges that might arise as a result of the state unit's organizational adjustments. However, he stated that Congress will investigate the situation and come up with a solution.

In an interview with ANI, Rawat remarked that these problems occur when changes within the party.

Many Punjab Congress leaders unhappy

A number of Punjab Congress leaders have communicated their displeasure with Amarinder Singh to the party's top leadership. They asked that he be removed as chief minister, claiming that his management style is detrimental to the party and the state.

This internal feud erupts barely days after Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh expressed his concerns to Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi on August 11 about Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu's recent statements following his appointment to the office.

According to media reports, Amarinder Singh 'complained' to Sonia Gandhi that Sidhu's criticism of his government is detrimental to its smooth functioning and creates a negative public perception.

Navjot Singh Siddhu continues to defy Amarinder Singh’s leadership

Navjot Singh Sidhu has been named president of the party's Punjab unit ahead of next year's Assembly elections.

Sidhu's appointment came after months of squabbling inside the state unit, with the former cricketer publicly defying Captain Amarinder Singh's leadership on a number of issues.

Congress wants to build onto 2017 election victory

In addition to Sidhu, Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi has named Sangat Singh Gilzian, Sukhwinder Singh Danny, Pawan Goel, and Kuljit Singh Nagra as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee's Working Presidents with Punjab elections 2022 in view.

After securing 77 seats in the 2017 Assembly elections, the Congress earned an absolute majority in the state, deposing the SAD-BJP coalition after 10 years in power.

The Aam Aadmi Party came in second with 20 seats in the 117-member Punjab Legislative Assembly. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) received only 15 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received 3.
