Basant Rath – A ray of hope for indigent students in Kashmir
Senior IPS officer Basant Kumar Rath has become a ray of hope for indigent students who are preparing for various competitive examinations in the valley of Kashmir.
The officer has made a wide variety of books available for exams like NET, GATE, NEET etc and has been receiving an overwhelming response.
From the last couple of months, he has been posting updates on his official Twitter handle regarding various books and their availability with him.
“On Sunday (between 7 to 8 AM), any deserving student preparing for NEET examination can just come to my place and take more than ten books in one go. No questions asked. No documents needed. A relative must accompany them,” reads one of his tweets.

Basant Rath, hailing from Odisha, is a 2000 batch IPS officer of Jammu and Kashmir cadre. The former IGP (Traffic) became famous for his Singham-style policing against traffic violators in the State.
From lifting the Audi of top police officer’s kin, implementing the helmet rule to removing music systems from public transport and starting a public outreach programme on social media, Basant had gone the extra mile to ensure adherence to traffic rules. However, his style of work also raised some eyebrows.
The IPS officer was later replaced by Alok Kumar as new Inspector General of Police. He is presently attached in the office of Commandant General Home Guards/Civil Defence, SDRF.
We contacted the officer about his noble deed for the students of Kashmir but he declined to comment and brushed aside the questions about it.
