In a tragic road accident in south Kashmir, at least 11 students headed for a picnic including nine girls lost their lives. The mishap took place on Mughal road near Pir Ki Galli in Shopian district.

Reports said over a dozen students from a private computer institute from Surankote area of Poonch were travelling in a Tempo for a picnic. However, their vehicle fell into a deep gorge near Pir Ki Galli, leaving 11 students dead.
Apart from the 11 dead, 7 others also sustained injuries in the accident. The injured have been shifted to a hospital in the State capital Srinagar for specialized treatment, officials said.
Meanwhile, Governor Satya Pal Malik expressed grief over the loss of lives in the tragic accident. In a condolence message, he conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for peace to the departed souls.
Satya Pal Malik also announced an ex gratia of Rs. 5 lakh each to the next of the kin of the deceased.
