The first underground metro service in India, Kolkata Metro bid farewell to the last non-AC rake on its Foundation Day.

On its 37th birthday, India’s first underground metro, the Kolkata Metro, has bid farewell to its last non-ac rake in an exhibition titled ‘Down to Memory Lane’ at the Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station. The metro will operate now only with AC rakes.

To celebrate the occasion, a photo exhibition was organized inside one of the non-AC rakes in the Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station. The Metro Rail Kolkata tweeted – A befitting farewell to Non-AC rakes has been given today during the 37th Foundation Day programme held at Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station.

 The metro general manager had ceremoniously chugged the last non-AC rakes in the cashed in Noapara.

Kolkata Metro will now only have AC rakes

After chugging down the last non-ac rakes, the general manager Manoj Joshi has announced that from now on, Kolkata people will only enjoy AC metro rides.

Until now, all the 28 rakes in the North-South corridor or Line 1 are air-conditioned. The East-West Metro had 14 air-conditioned BEMLAC rakes. On its foundation day, the officials have also noted that the routes covered by the metro increased from 3.2 km (Esplanade-Bhabanipur) to 32 km (Dakhineshwar-Kavi Subhas).

In 2010, the first AC rake was added to the Kolkata Metro fleet.

The expansion of Kolkata Metro services  

While taking the trip to the memory lane, the officials have also said that they will increase the metro service in the city. According to DD News, the metro service from Sealdah to Salt Lake sector V is likely to begin within the next three months. 

The East-West Metro Rail service might be launched by December next year.
