Rajib Banerjee's return to TMC in Tripura is the best choice as he accompanied Mukul Roy several times when the party was trying to expand to this North-eastern state, earlier.
Amid the string of people leaving Bengal BJP, former minister Rajib Banerjee in Mamata’s cabinet is set to return to TMC today in Tripura. Rajib’s ghar wapsi in the state capital, Agartala, rang the warning bells for BJP. It clearly states that no BJP bastion is safe from TMC.
The former minister had joined BJP in January 2021 in a dramatized exit by clutching onto Mamata’s picture.
The reason behind choosing Tripura
According to many political legends, Tripura is the best choice for Banerjee to return to his former party. He was frequent to the state with Mukul Roy before he quit the party to expand the party base in the state.
It is said that he has a strong political network there, currently required for executing TMC hopes to win the upcoming state poll.
In the 2021 polls, Rajib Banerjee had contested from Domjur seat for BJP but lost the battle quite badly. He was TMC MLA from the same constituency. After the results were declared, he had visited a couple of TMC leaders' homes, fueling the then rumours about his return. He had met Kunal Ghosh in May 2021 and has recently paid a visit to Abhishek Banerjee in his office.
The number of defectors is increasing
Mamata Banerjee had just returned from her Goa’s showstopper visit. The return of Rajib Banerjee followed next. The turn of events is just getting difficult for BJP. Around a couple of days back, Kalyani Krishna became the fifth BJP legislator joining TMC. Earlier, Mukul Roy, Babul Supriyo and others have joined the green brigade.
If the situation continues, it would be difficult for BJP to maintain their 17 seat win in the parliamentary polls in 2024. Recently, they have said that they will gift Modi more than 25 parliamentary seats from Bengal in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. West Bengal has 42 parliamentary constituencies.
Meanwhile, in a political meeting in Tripura, Abhishek Banerjee has promised that no teachers or other government employee will lose their jobs if TMC is voted to power in the presence of Rajib Banerjee.
