The first direct flight from Srinagar will land at Sharjah International Airport in United Arab Emirates.

From October 23, Srinagar Airport will begin offering international flights, linking the city with the rest of the world.

Director Srinagar Airport, Kuldeep Singh, stated that the first international flight from Srinagar airport to Sharjah International Airport in United Arab Emirates will take off on Saturday.

He added that the first flight to Sharjah will depart at 18:20 hours (06:20 PM) on October 23 and that one flight will go from Srinagar to Sharjah on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with only domestic flights on the remaining days.

Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir took stock of preparations

Pandurang K Pole, the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, attended a meeting on Monday, October 18 to discuss the functioning of international flights from Srinagar International Airport.

The discussion examined the necessary procedures that must be put in place, as well as passenger management, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pole urged officials to painstakingly carry out plans, including passenger management and regulation, segregation of local and foreign passengers, and quick PCR at the airport for international travellers, in addition to the obligatory RTPCR test within 48 hours.

Jyotiraditya Scindia announced the plan a month ago

This comes about a month after Union civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia claimed that attempts are underway to begin international flights in Srinagar, which will help the union territory prosper.

On September 25, he also announced that the Srinagar airport's terminal will be extended from 25,000 to 63,000 square metres.

Notably, the Srinagar airport would receive a Rs 1,500 crore investment, while the Jammu airport will receive a Rs 600 crore investment.

International flights to ease travel of Kashmiris working abroad

Hundreds of Kashmiri travellers working in the Middle East are anticipated to benefit from the development, which is considered a blessing.

It would save time and money when travelling to the Middle East, especially for families of Middle Eastern workers, who had to go to Delhi first and then to Sharjah.

HM Amit Shah to inaugurate the first international flight

Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, will inaugurate the first direct international flight between Srinagar and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir on Saturday. This is Shah's first visit to the union territory after Article 370 was repealed in August 2019.
