Why is PM Modi so obsessed with putting all the blame on Nehru?

Prime Minister Modi invoked the Nehru name yet again, blaming him for the delay in liberation of Goa

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s obsession with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru has always been a thing of discussion in public circles. Even after blaming the late freedom fighter and first ever Prime Minister of independent India for years together, it looks like Modi isn’t done with it.

In fact, every time Modi finds himself helpless and forced to a corner, he invokes the Nehru name. And he does it with ultimate detest to the first Prime Minister. As he utters the words that blame Nehru for something, the bhakts go into a frenzy, hopping on to social media calling for an encore and celebration.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi did it again on Tuesday, while replying to the debate on motion of thanks to the President’s address in Rajya Sabha. Though his fiery speech is being celebrated by the saffron outfits and bhakts across the country and overseas too, the fact is that Modi was desperately trying to cover up his follies. The migrant labour issue is one of such errors that the government had committed. But the blame was very cunningly placed on others, much to the joy of the bhakts and his colleagues in the Union Cabinet and the Parliament.

The Nehru reference that repeatedly comes back

Coming back to the Jawaharlal Nehru reference, Narendra Modi first fired the first salvo against dynasty politics, clearly aiming at the Congress and of course Jawaharlal Nehru. And then, it was Goa’s turn to provide anchor to Modispeak. As everyone knows, Goa is set to vote in a few days, and what better timing would Modi have to bring independent India's first Prime Minster in the affairs of Goa!

According to the Prime Minister, Goa had to remain under imperial rule for years so that Panditji in his capacity as Prime Minister could maintain his image at the international level. Modi went on to drag the cases of Hyderabad and Junagadh, which Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel strived to merge with the Indian union.

Reiterating that the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was more concerned about his international image, Modi attacked his predecessor saying that Nehru thought that if Goa’s foreign government was attacked, his image of a peace-loving global leader would be harmed. So he let Goa suffer. Adding that Goa had to stay in slavery for 15 more years, he hinted that if it was not for Nehru, Goa would have been liberated much earlier.

Nehru, Goa and the Assembly polls

He even harked back into the past quoting Jawaharlal Nehru’s 15 August 1955 address, saying that the then PM had said thus: ‘Have no doubts that we will take any secret steps for Goa. There is no force around Goa. Some people within India want to make noise and compel us to send forces there. We will not send a force, we will resolve it peacefully and everybody must understand that.” This, according to Narendra Modi, was a stance against the people of Goa.

The Goa Assembly polls was obviously in Prime Minister Modi’s mind when he said this. And attacking Nehru, as he always does, came as a cunning measure this time to seek support for the BJP in Goa. Though the Congress has protested, that doesn’t deter PM Modi from going all out against former Prime Minister Nehru. He does that always, And, he will continue doing so. After all, it is his way of way of making sure that he is a better man and Prime Minister than Nehru. That, ultimately, is how he wants to put down the Congress. The funny fact is that most people in India know this for sure.
