The operation performed on the patient at NSCB Medical College Jabalpur had some complications and therefore private hospitals refused to do the operation.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, Jabalpur conducted successfully its first and the state’s second Kidney transplant operation. It is only the second transplant operation that was conducted in a Government Hospital of the state. The operation was conducted at the Urology Department of the Super speciality centre of the Medical College.

The patient was a 27-year-old man from Katni who was diagnosed with Kidney failure and was on dialysis for the last three months. The donor was the young man’s father. However, the operation involved certain complications and the private hospitals refused to do the operation. Finals Doctors from Jabalpur medical college took up the challenge ad successfully undertook the Kidney Transplant Operation.

A team of 10 Doctors were tasked with the operation at NSCB Medical College Jabalpur. After obtaining all the necessary permissions and following Covid Protocols, the Kidney Transplant Operation date was set for Sunday. The team of 10 doctors was led by HOD Urology Department, Dr Phanindra Solanki.  Dr Aswini Pathak, Dr Neeraj Jain and Dr Tushar did all the preoperative procedures. Administrative permissions were obtained by Super Specialty Director Dr Y.R.Yadav.

Kidney Transplant Operation done free of cost

The complete procedure was done free of cost under the Ayushman Yojana. The family of the patient had sought help from private hospitals in Bhopal. The cost of the operation came out to be 7 to 8 lakhs which the family could not afford. The family later contacted NSCB Medical College and after deliberation, the Doctors decided to carry out the transplant. The operation was tricky since the donor Kidney had double arteries. However, Doctors of Jabalpur Medical College took up the challenge and were successful.

According to Dr Neeraj Jain, who was one of the doctors in the team, both the donor and the patient are recovering well and will be discharged in six to nine days. Both the donor and the recipient of the Kidney are recuperating in a special post-transplant ICU in the super speciality hospital.

Expressing satisfaction after the successful Kidney Transplant, Dr P. K. Kasar said that there will be more complicated operations at the Government Hospital in future. The successful transplant operation can be credited to the players behind the scene who helped to Fastrack the necessary permissions and also helped to collect necessary medicines and surgical products. Their efforts helped to give a new lease of life to a dying person.
