Govt’s indiscriminate tax collection making everything expensive: Rahul Gandhi

The Congress leader said the rising prices due to brazen tax collection not only made the consumers upset but the inflation was also not handing more income to people like shopkeepers, farmers or small producers.

NEW DELHI — Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader and Member of Parliament, on Friday criticized the Narendra Modi led Central government, accusing it of being responsible for ‘everything getting expensive’ in the country.

The Congress leader said the rising prices not only made the consumers upset but the inflation was also not handing more income to people like shopkeepers, farmers or small producers.

“Everything is getting expensive – Consumers are upset. But is it getting any benefit to the small producer, shopkeeper or farmer? Not!” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

“Because this inflation is actually the indiscriminate tax collection of Modi government,” Mr Rahul said, while calling the taxes levied by the Centre as ‘tax extortion’.

According to Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI), annual consumer inflation rate in India was little changed at 6.26 percent in June from 6.30 percent in May of 2021, lower than market forecasts of 6.58 percent.

A slowdown was seen in cost of pan, tobacco and intoxicants (3.98 percent vs 10 percent in May); miscellaneous (7.28 percent vs 7.52 percent); clothing and footwear; and housing (3.75 percent vs 3.86 percent). In contrast, inflation accelerated for food (5.15 percent vs 5.01 percent); fuel and light (12.68 percent vs 11.58 percent); and clothing and footwear (6.21 percent vs 5.32 percent).

Retail inflation stayed above the Central bank target range of 2 percent to 6 percent for the second month, due to high global commodity prices.

India’s retail and wholesale inflation will probably accelerate during the second half of this year, according to economists surveyed by Bloomberg. However, Indian monetary policy makers have maintained that the country’s current inflation is due to supply-side problems and won’t persist, while they focus resources on an economic rebound.
