Covid-19 still lurks; 11 Mn new infections recorded across the world

The new numbers have been recorded between March 7 and 13, and it looks like the world will have to stay wary of Covid-19

The Covid-19 situation, which the world thought was on the wane for good, seems to be coming back with full force yet again. As of the latest available figures, the world is waking up to at least 11 million new infections. These numbers come from WHO records between March 7 and 13.

Though certain parts of the world had been seen a massive reduction in testing for Covid-19 infections of late, the new numbers are of concern. As per the WHO, the surge could be due to various aspects such as the presence of the highly transmissible Omicron and BA.2 sub-variants and also the laxity in measures that could have brought the virus under absolute control.

It was China that has reported an alarming increase in coronavirus infections. More than 8000 new cases have been reported in the past delays. This surge is huge considering that the pandemic was showing signs of slowing down after so many months.

Covid-19 cases surge in China

China’s new surge in Covid-19 cases is being attributed to the 'stealth Omicron' variant. The reports as on Wednesday showed that the Asian country detected over 3,000 new cases in 24 hours, and close to 5000 cases a day before. This has forced to administration to quickly implement tough restrictions in cities. The multiple outbreaks have left millions under difficult restrictions and social distancing norms.

Meanwhile, another country in Asia also saw an unprecedented hike in Covid-19 cases. Reports flowing in from South Korean cities state that a new record has been set with 621,328 Covid cases and 429 deaths being registered.

Europe, US fear a new wave

On the other side, Europe also looks like having been affected by a fresh wave of Covid-19 cases. However, countries such as Germany are not wary anymore with restrictions set to come off despite a new record increase in the infections are being reported. It is even more worrisome that the Covid-19 rise, combined with the war has been pinning down Ukraine.

The US is mulling over bringing back restrictions in case the infection numbers post an increase in the coming days.
