Image
The World Happiness Report 2021 shows how India is in no position to smile. It is inching closer to Taliban-ruled Afghanistan and is far behind all its neighbouring countries. The 10th edition of the World Happiness Report was released on the 18th March 2022 by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network. The report contains the national happiness trends over the year 2019-2021. These trends are explored based on a deep analysis of various factors such as perceptions of corruption, social support, healthy life expectations, generosity, GDP per capita, freedom of choice among others. The principal source of data for the World Happiness Report is the Gallup World Poll, which is a comprehensive and factual survey of the world. The Gallup World Poll takes between 1000 -2000 responses from each country. The results of life evaluations are based on what is called the Cantril Ladder (1) or the Cantril Self-Anchoring Scale. Many Muslim students, who had boycotted classes and exams across the state’s schools, have been left stranded following state Education Minister BC Nagesh stating that the government would not conduct re-exams for the absentees. With the Education Minister reiterating that the state cannot re-organise board examinations, students who missed the exams owing to the row are now left high and dry. The Minister has been quoted saying that “whatever the reason for the student absenting himself or herself during the exams, this year would be no different. Whatever the order says, we will follow it. It might be for hijab issue or other reasons, we will not hold examinations again.” No re-exams stance worry students The students who had not a...

Matrice 30 is DJI’s new drone purpose-built for enterprise applications

Image
The DJI Matrice 30 has the capability of functioning in temperatures between from -4 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. In 2016, when DJI unveiled in front of the world its Mavic drone, the event came about as a landmark in the world of tiny flying machines. The drone that came with capabilities that allowed itself to fold itself had been copied by many drone makers across the world. And then later on, after two years to be precise, DJI brought to the fore a second model that held aloft enterprise capabilities. This model, christened Mavic 2, came with the addition of a modular mount that could be used to deploy a spotlight or a speaker that could help it fly in less than ideal conditions. However, instead of turning out to be an enterprise model, the Mavic 2 had a slant towards being a consumer drone, and remained so. Matrice 30 is DJI’s third And now, after a long gap, DJI has  unveiled  a new purpose-built  drone  for enterprise applications. Called Matrice 30, it is so different from its p...

The elections are a biennial affair and the Vidhan Parishad witnesses a third of its members retiring every two years. With the last date for filing of nominations getting over today (March 21), the poll scene has been turning out to be hot. The current Vidhan Parishad has a BJP majority with 35 MLCs, while the SP has 17. The other remaining seat...

West Bengal CPI(M) pays homage to Soviet leader Stalin; TMC, BJP find it hard to digest

Image
West Bengal CPI(M) is at the receiving end of attacks from BJP and TMC for paying homage to Joseph Stalin On March 5, it was Soviet leader Joseph Stalin’s death anniversary. And, here in India, the West Bengal Communist Party of India (Marxist) decided to pay homage to the departed leader through a social media post.  And that gesture has now put the West Bengal CPI(M) at the receiving end of attacks from the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Trinamool Congress. The comrades in West Bengal would not have imagined that such a huge backlash would be triggered by their homage to Stalin. After all, for the CPI(M), Stalin is among the greatest Communist leaders and revolutionaries the world has seen. And it was only natural to pay tribute to him. Little did they know it was something that would not go down well with the others around. CPI(M) tweet pays homage to Stalin The West Bengal Communist Party of India (Marxist) party’s tweet read thus: "We remember one of the greatest Communist le...

Delay in Govt. formation and the opportunity it throws up: What’s up, Goa?

Image
MLAs cutting across parties want us to form Govt in Goa, says Congress Post-poll Goa is again under the limelight. This time around it is the delay in government formation in the state that is being discussed threadbare. And, at the centre of it is the Congress party, which has raised issues against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s slow-steps towards government formation. The Congress unit in Goa has accused the BJP of delaying the government formation. Further, in a bid to make its stance clear on the issue, the party has also said that a bunch of MLAs from other parties had been pushing the party to form the government in the state. Going by what Goa CM and senior Congress legislator Digambar Kamat has stated, the BJP seems to have problems within the organisation and that could be why the event is being deliberately delayed.  The election results had come out a week ago and Kamat feels that the BJP’s claim that it has 20-plus elected representatives on its side is malicious, false, and ...

Tutoring Congress on how to beat the BJP in future polls

Image
Fight the BJP state-by-state in future polls, is what Congress veteran P Chidambaram has to tell party colleagues How does a party like Congress hope to win against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in the future? With victory constantly eluding the grand old party, it looks like a strategy to hold the party together so as to win upcoming polls has turned out to be a must. Veteran leader P Chidambaram seems to have a formula to win, and this could come about as a pointer to the days ahead for the Congress party. Fight the BJP state-by-state. That’s what Chidambaram has put forward as a suggestion. That could mean that the Congress will have to strategize as per the need of each state or region and pick up some winner links to stand up against the BJP. Future polls, bolder outlook A cautious strategy would be thus: When an election is announced in West Bengal, going solo would be bane for the Congress party, considering the current circumstances. The party is down and out, and to take o...

Image
The new numbers have been recorded between March 7 and 13, and it looks like the world will have to stay wary of Covid-19 The Covid-19 situation, which the world thought was on the wane for good, seems to be coming back with full force yet again. As of the latest available figures, the world is waking up to at least 11 million new infections. These numbers come from WHO records between March 7 and 13. Though certain parts of the world had been seen a massive reduction in testing for Covid-19 infections of late, the new numbers are of concern. As per the WHO, the surge could be due to various aspects such as the presence of the highly transmissible Omicron and BA.2 sub-variants and also the laxity in measures that could have brought the virus under absolute control. It was China that has reported an alarming increase in coronavirus infections. More than 8000 new cases have been reported in the past delays. This surge is huge considering that the pandemic was showing signs of slowing dow...

Congress needs to look at the new age to continue its existence

Image
Poll debacle throws up the need for leadership and organisational change in the Congress party The Gandhi siblings are in a fix. With many a leader in the Congress party pointing fingers at Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi as responsible for the massive defeat of the party in the recently concluded Assembly elections in five states, the time seems to have arrived for the Gandhi family to see things in perspective. The defeat has come about as a major event that should spur the Congress party to go into introspection mode. However, apart from Rahul Gandhi’s “we will learn from our mistakes” statement, the party top brass seems to be doing absolutely nothing about it. Looking at what is going on at the Gandhis, it looks like there hasn’t been even a stock-taking initiative so far. The dissident Congress leaders, however, seem to have come together to assess what has happened. The leaders of the dissident G23, who had, earlier in 2020, written to party chief Sonia Gandhi seeking changes i...

Image

Punjab gives Kejriwal much to hope for; Will AAP spread wings?

Image
Arvind Kejriwal has termed the Punjab victory as a revolution by the Aam Aadmi Party   For Arvind Kejriwal, the win for his party in Punjab is nothing short of a revolution. He believes that the Punjab victory is the second revolution of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) after it did the same in Delhi years ago. Kejriwal will now look to spread the victory horizons in other parts of India too, and that is the confidence that the Punjab win has given him and his party. This win is also a major boost for the man personally, as he was accused by his erstwhile colleague Kumar Vishwas as being ready to take support from ‘separatist elements’ in Punjab to become the state's chief minister. That was an allegation Kejriwal found tough to stomach. This major win comes as his reply to Kumar Vishwas and those who made stories out of his allegation. Win injects added confidence in Kejriwal That was exactly what he meant to declare when he said, post-results, that the people of Punjab have chosen AAP a...
