Has the BJP failed to gauge party issues in Goa?

Image
Goa BJP faces serious hassles as two top men leave over party attitude towards them The BJP in Goa seems to be facing a peculiar problem. While leaders from other parties are lining up to join the saffron fold in many poll bound states, the Goan scene is a bit different. And, it doesn’t augur well for the ruling party. The developments in the Goa unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party also points at a few internal issues that the party top brass seems to be ignoring. While the party is keen on bringing in senior leaders from other parties to strengthen the party structure, it is also ignoring the leaders who had toiled hard to build a face for it in Goa. For instance, Michael Lobo, the Port and Waste Management Minister in the Pramod Sawant government, and two-time MLA of the BJP, has quit just ahead of the Assembly polls. The resignation comes in the wake of Lobo realising that he is no longer wanted by the party. BJP leaders Lobo, Zantye quit party ahead of polls What makes Lobo think so

A nation is at peril when the PM stays silent on hate crimes

Image
Will the letter from IIM students and faculty members urging PM Modi to end silence over attacks on minorities yield result? A nation that till recently took pride in its secular ideals has found the foundation of that very pride shaking. The developments that had sent the secular-minded Indian into a state of panic have been on the increase, and no concrete intervention has come from those that are supposed to uphold religious harmony. Not doing anything to preserve peaceful co-existence of various communities that form a nation called India is one major flaw. Added to that, when a government, which is expected to intervene to stop such things from happening, does exactly the opposite and remains a mute witness to the crimes that are committed, it becomes a matter of grave concern. With the attack on  minorities  reported from certain quarters, it was expected that the government, which is actually a team of democratically-elected persons who swore by the Constitution that holds aloft

Covid-safe Gangasagar Mela: Is that actually possible?

Image
Going ahead with the Gangasagar Mela, where thousands are expected to converge, doesn’t seem to be a sensible idea Despite the warnings and precautionary protocols aimed at keeping the coronavirus spread in check, certain parts of India have been witnessing huge crowds and zero social distancing. The rallies taken out by various parties in poll-bound states were an example of how irresponsible people can be. Though many parties have,  of late , decided to put off or cancel such large gatherings scheduled as part of election campaigns, the extent of damage already done is not small. The latest we hear is about the Gangasagar Mela, which coincides with the Makar Sankranti. Every year, the religious fair hosts pilgrims and tourists arriving in large numbers to take a holy dip in the confluence of Ganga and Bay of Bengal, and offer prayers at the Kapil Muni Temple. With Bengal already reeling under the onslaught of the surge in Covid-19 cases, it had turned out to be a matter of concern wh
