From a 'caged parrot' to a 'vulture on leash', how ED has become a tool for a Political Witch Hunt

Image
A public petitioner appealed before the Honorable Supreme Court, seeking its judicial activism on Enforcement Directorate (ED) Chief Sanjay Mishra's questionable tenure extension for the third time under the BJP Government.  The Supreme Court bench headed by Justice B.R. Gavai, Justice Vikram Nath, and Justice Sanjay Karol had to ask the Center's Solicitor General Tushar Mehta if the fated retirement of a senior bureaucrat would bring the entire agency's functioning to a pause. Yet, there was a mild apprehension in his answer to the question. Sanjay Mishra, the former Chief Commissioner of the Delhi Income Tax Department, was elected as the ED Chief in 2018 for two years. Amidst severe allegations posed by the Opposition Parties against his functioning with the agency, the Government gave the senior bureaucrat a one-year extension in 2020. An NGO sensed foul play and filed a petition before the Supreme Court, but it got ratified.  ED Chief Sanjay Kumar Mishra In November 20

Bulldozer Raj: An Eyesore to civil society

Image
In the States of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, "bulldozer justice" is in high demand. "Baba and Mama" (Yogi Adityanath and Shivraj Singh Chouhan) display their strongman image by bulldozing the houses and livelihood of the accused while the police and the judiciary sit like broody ducks. Yogi Adityanath has the blessing from his master for cherry-picking some cases and delivering "instant justice" by crushing their accommodation and means of their livelihood. On the other hand, Shivraj Singh Chouhan is reluctant to miss out on the limelight associated with the macho model of governance. Recently, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader Pravesh Shukla's house in Sidhi, Madhya Pradesh, got demolished after a video of him urinating on a tribal man went viral. Shivraj Singh knew the consequences of not employing the same bulldozer raj on his party worker. Thus, after facing much pressure from his peers, he allowed a bulldozer to be driven through Pr

Manipur: BJP’s majoritarian experiment sparks civil war

Image

Constitutional experts are vouching for President's rule as the Manipur Chief Minister continues to fuel outrage rather than curtailing it. What is more shocking is that the Prime Minister of India has not yet uttered a word to arbitrate or even address the people during the horrendous bloodshed in the region. In this article, we will highlight the root cause of Manipur's unrest and how the forceful imposition of India's majoritarian politics has proven fatal to the region's fragile balance of power. History of the conflict in Manipur The conflict in Manipur is that of a peculiar kind, not the kind which the people of 'mainland India' can relate to. To understand the context of this unrest, we need to familiarise ourselves with the region’s geographical and historical differences. For centuries, this state has witnessed a very

In a groundbreaking disclosure that sends shockwaves through the beverage industry, the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified aspartame, a commonly used artificial sweetener, as a possible  carcinogen . This revelation challenges decades-long assurances by major beverage manufacturers, particularly The Coca-Cola Company, about the safety and health benefits of this zero-calorie sweetener.
