Measles cases surged by 79 per cent globally during the same time period, following a similar pattern. In January and February, almost 17,000 cases of measles were reported, mostly in Somalia, Yemen, Nigeria, Afghanistan, and Ethiopia. The number nearly doubled from 9,665 in the first two months of 2021, according to a statement released by the United Nations’ World Health Organization (WHO) in April 2022. As per WHO, at least 21 ‘large and disruptive’ outbreaks have been reported in Africa and the East Mediterranean region in the last year.
