Looming food crisis shatters Sri Lanka’s 100% organic dream

Image
Sri Lanka has lifted the ban on agro-chemical imports owing to a food shortage, and thus dumps dream of being first fully organic farming nation. It all began with a dream. The dream of transforming an entire country into the world’s first organic farming nation. However, the dream that Sri Lanka has been nursing for a while has now been shattered. The disappointment has come as a follow up to a crisis that seemed set to loom large over the nation. With food security at risk, Sri Lanka has abandoned its dream of being the first ever country in the world that has a fully organic farming regime. The South Asian nation had to abandon its noble quest, and the administration made it official by proclaiming that it would immediately lift an import ban on pesticides and other chemical herbicides. This has come about due to the severe economic crisis as lack of foreign exchange sparked off food shortage, and shortage of crude oil and other essential goods. The nation’s farming sector has rea

Stormy winter session on cards in Indian Parliament

Image
The BJP is gearing up to take on Mamata Banerjee, a difficult opponent. Both the opposition and the ruling BJP party are making preparation for the winter session of the Parliament, which is sure to be a stormy one. The entry of Mamata Banerjee has made the political scene very acute. The last session of the Parliament was lost to the  Pegasus Scandal  and the Supreme Court of the country had appointed an expert committee on the issue. The Congress has said that it will wait for the results of the committee. The Farm Bills and the Lakhimpur killings will also figure prominently. BJP faces formidable foe in the form of Mamata Banerjee The BJP is readying itself to face a formidable foe in the form of Mamata Banerjee. However, it will have to be seen how she can become a beacon around which all the splintered opposition parties unite. As of now, both Mamata and the Congress are on divergent paths. Didi and the art of dodging Congress dosti

Image
Mamata gave Sonia the miss, and when asked whether she would call on the Congress president, her retort was loaded. It looks like Didi doesn’t believe in being friends with the Congress anymore. Though Mamata Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister, has always been very close with Congress President Sonia Gandhi, she seems to have now decided to drive past all such ties. This was evident when Mamata, on an official visit to  New Delhi , decided not to meet Sonia. She called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed issues such as the BSF's territorial jurisdiction in West Bengal and urged him for a withdrawal. That being strictly official, she gave it more focus. But Sonia Gandhi was given the miss, and when asked whether she would call on the Congress president, the retort that came from Mamata was loaded. When she said she was “not constitutionally mandated” to meet Sonia, she was indeed making her stance clear. Thought she dropped just a hin

Why scrapping of farm laws may not be a good thing in the long run

Image
Where did the government go wrong? This question needs serious pondering! Though the three farm laws have been withdrawn, its ramifications are going to be felt for a long time. True the way in which the law was enacted in the form of an ordinance was enacted without a proper debate was highly erroneous. The timing of the bill was also not correct since there was no hurry to enact the law. When the opening of the Indian economy was heralded by Manmohan Singh, the then finance minister in the Narsimha Rao ministry it was the necessity of the hour. However, there was no emergency for the Government to enact the farm laws in such a hurry. Delay in rollback of farm laws led farmers to harden their stance The delay in the climb-down by the government has also led to a hardening of stance by the farmers. Narendra Modi‘s speech to the nation saw him accepting his folly, asking for forgiveness is something which is unparalleled in Indian history. No other leader including Jawaharlal Nehru af
